This exercise, also known as box breathing, was popularized by Navy SEALs who use the breath to stay collected and rational under duress, harmonizing feelings of concentration with calm, energy and performance.
Mechanics
Breathe slowly into the lower abdomen to expand your stomach on the inhale while contracting on the exhale.
Science
This breath balances the nervous system with equal inhale & exhale ratios done in box formation.
Short breath holds between slow, thoughtful inhales and exhales allows CO2 concentration to elevate in your blood and raises our tolerence with consistent practice. Higher CO2 tolerance = superior endurance, stamina & performance.
